Bavaria Blue Stars started the Elite Round of the GABBA League, where the title will be decided, with a hard-fought win against Lincoln Bayside, and, on current form, must be ruing their 3 first-round defeats against the other title contenders, as well as against Lincoln Bayside. Europa Valmar are the beneficiaries of this result, which leaves them unbeaten, on top of the table. Lincoln Bayside now have 2 defeats, with Bavaria Blue Stars and RCA Bricklayers on 3 each. It’s not over yet, but Europa Valmar’s advantage is massive, in the circumstances.
In this match, Angel Guerrero’s 12 points led BBS to an 18-14 lead after an even first quarter. LB were just 1 point (30-31) behind 2 minutes from half-time, but Thomas Yome led a 13-0 run with 11 points - he had 16 in the quarter - to establish what was to be a telling 44-30 scoreline at the break.
LB went 18 down early on resumption, before Jamie Mesilio’s 20 points led them to reducing the deficit to 7 points (59-66) by the end of the quarter.
It was a thrilling last quarter to culminate a brilliant match, full of great individual performances, but it was a concerted all round team effort that drove BBS to increase their lead to 13 points (82-69) after 5 minutes.
An equally impressive all-round team effort by LB, particularly with time running out, resulted in a 17-5 run which took them to within 1 point (87-86) with 1 minute to play.
